Forecast Calls for Increased Flying Pest Population in Houston
Acquisition Marketing
With warmer, wetter spring weather on its way, we can expect to see a higher than normal flying pest population this year.
Houston’s winter weather brought warmer than normal temperatures – who remembers the 80-degree day after Christmas? We all loved these warm winter days, but so did many pests. One side effect of this warm weather is that there simply was not enough cold weather to reduce the flying insect population like mosquitoes and stinging insects. It only takes a few consecutive warm days for flying insects to reappear, and with our record breaking warm winter temperatures, mosquito season may not only start earlier this year, but we may see a higher population of these swarming insects.
It is pretty simple, when our winters are milder; more flying insects are able to survive throughout those winter months. This means there will be more mosquitoes, wasps and other insects around come spring ready to bite and breed.
What Pests Will Affect the Houston Area?
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes will be in full swing this summer and in some Houston areas, they may even be driving your friends and family indoors.
We recommend you perform a self-assessment of your yard and identify any areas that could be mosquito breeding grounds. During this assessment, look for anything in your yard that could hold water, from obvious items like flower pots and old tires, to lesser-known items like bottle caps or children’s toys. Yes, even small areas of water like a bottle cap are a means for mosquitoes to breed! Eliminating these collection points can help control populations on your property. Make sure your rain gutters are cleaned regularly too, as the smallest clog can pool water and attract mosquitoes.
Stinging Insects
There are many stinging insects that can affect property owners in Houston, and this summer, they will come in healthy numbers. Stinging insects will be swarming Houston properties this summer looking for a food source and nesting area.
Preventing or eliminating stinging insects on your property can be a difficult task. There is the possibility of being stung, and if you do not destroy the entire colony, the remaining insects will most likely come back and rebuild their nests. In most cases, it’s best to leave control of stinging insects to the professionals. Avoid entering areas where stinging insects frequent (fruit trees, flowers, etc.) to help protect yourself.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches, wood roaches, water bugs or Palmetto bugs, regardless of what you call them, these critters will be invading your home more than ever come summer.
Cockroaches can be difficult to prevent and control. You can help reduce the risk of these bugs entering your home this summer by reducing moisture in and around your home. You can do this by making sure that gutters are working properly and that crawl spaces are properly ventilated.
